Fat Burning Foods and Thermogenesis
Generally, when we talk about “fat burning foods,” we’re referring to their heat-producing effects. This is known as the “thermic effect of food” (TEF). In reality, all foods are considered “thermogenic” since the body has to use energy to digest them. But not all foods possess the same thermic effect. Lean protein from solid foods, for example, is the most thermogenic food. Research shows that the thermic effect of protein requires about 30% of its calories for the digestion process. There are various types of lean proteins, such as chicken breast, turkey breast, and fish, but a more unique protein source is grass-fed bison.

Bison meat is a very lean and nutrient dense red meat. It’s high in iron and protein, but lower in calories per pound than beef, pork, and skinless chicken. This makes bison meat one of the highest quality fat burning proteins you can eat.
Grass-fed bison, however, offers additional benefits. The way the animal was raised is important because a healthier animal provides healthier meat. So remember to specifically eat grass-fed red meat. It doesn’t necessarily have to be bison. Eggs are another potent protein source, but remember to eat them whole with the yolks to reap the full benefits. There is a common misconception that the yolk is the worst part of the egg, but in fact, it’s where the majority of the nutrients are! Egg yolks are packed with B-vitamins, trace minerals, lutein, Vitamin A, essential fatty acids and bunch of other powerful nutrients. Also, the protein in the egg whites becomes more bio-available when eaten with the yolks because they balance out the overall amino acid profile.
Yes, the egg yolks do contain additional calories. But these calories are so nutrient-dense that your appetite becomes more stable throughout the day, and you end up eating less.
